Chapter 19 Summary
Tyrion is well enough to return to the small council, though he finds that it has changed a great deal since Stannis's attack. Now, Mace Tyrell and his allies have seats, as does the High Septon. Pycelle, Cersei, and Littlefinger are all there as well. The council is led by Lord Tywin and his brother, Ser Kevan. Varys reports that their Lord Tarly has defeated Robett Glover and that Prince Doran and his men are traveling north from Dorne for the royal wedding. Balon Greyjoy has written, naming himself King of the Iron Isles and of the North, and he offers to ally himself with the Lannisters and the Tyrells. However, Tywin decides that Greyjoy will have to fight for the north no matter what they do, so he decides to wait. Littlefinger proposes to leave aboard the Merling King and woo Lysa Arryn in the Vale. Though Littlefinger is only a minor lord, he is now the Lord of the Harrenhal in name if not in power, a title that allows him to propose the match. While he is gone, they decide that Tyrion shall take over the treasury. Members of the City Watch that fled have returned to their posts and Tywin decides to break their knees rather than sending them to the Wall, arguing that they are not responsible for protecting the rebel northerners. After the meeting, Tywin and Kevan to Cersei and Tyrion privately. Tywin informs Cersei that he means for her to marry again. He also explains that he intends for Tyrion to marry Sansa Stark. Tyrion will never rule in Casterly Rock, but they might manage to give him Winterfell.
