Chapter 18 Summary

Sam sobs in exhaustion as he marches south to the Wall. He is part of a caravan of men that survived the Others' attack. Sam knows that if he stops marching, he will die. Perhaps fifty men escaped the Fist of the First Men. When he heard a man scream behind him, Sam realized that the Others were chasing them still and he managed to run briefly. He remembers the night of the attack. He had awoken to the horns blaring. Chett had been there, dagger in his hand, and he had fled in fear at the sound of the horns. The weapons had no impact until the Night's Watch used fire arrows. Still, they lost the battle and fled, Sam released all of the birds, and Sam soon runs out of strength to walk. Small Paul offers to carry Sam, explaining that Chett had promised him the Old Bear's raven but maybe Sam will give him a raven when they return to the Wall. They slow and are soon outside of the circle of fire that Lord Mormont has established to protect his men. When their torch burns out, an Other attacks. Sam stabs the Other with an obsidian dagger and is surprised when it destroys the monster. He recalls that some call obsidian "dragonglass."
