Chapter 17 Summary
Arya looks at the moss on the trees and realizes that she is being taken south, away from Robb and Riverrun. She mentions as much to Gendry, who does not care. Only the two of them have decided to travel with the band of outlaws. Hot Pie stayed behind at the inn to make bread. When Arya tells the men around her that they are not going to Riverrun, they tell her that they know. However, it is their job to take her to their lord, Beric Dondarrion. They tell her how they set out from King's Landing to capture Ser Gregor Clegane, but it was actually a trap by Lord Tywin. He had intended to capture Lord Eddard Stark, but the latter had been attacked and injured by Jaime Lannister and so Lord Beric had been sent out instead. Lord Beric was injured in the attack, they explain, but Thoros, the red priest of Myr, healed him. Now, they are taking Arya to Lord Beric as their captive. When she hears the word, Arya commands her horse to run. She outpaces all of the men but Harwin, who catches up to her and stops her from escaping. He explains that he fights for the smallfolk now. Arya promises to stay with them, though in her mind she remains determined to reach her brother.
