Chapter 13 Summary
Arya and Hot Pie are digging for vegetables left in an untended garden when they hear the sound of men approaching. Arya sends Hot Pie away to Gendry but is determined to kill the men if they pose a threat. Her plan is ruined when their horse whinnies. The men introduce themselves. Tom Sevenstrings carries a harp, Lem Lemoncloak is a swordsman, and Anguy is an archer. They are king's men that serve King Robert. They lead Arya, Hot Pie, and Gendry to a nearby inn. There, they meet the innkeeper and her husband, who complain to Tom that they did not recover the horses they sold to the odd threesome—a man, a chained man, and a maid dressed in mail—that passed by earlier. They feed Arya and her companions and offer her a slip of paper promising payment for their weapons and their horse. Arya realizes that the "king's men" are just outlaws, but she nevertheless demands that they let her take their skiff. They are interrupted by the approach of horses. When Lem tries to stop Arya from fleeing, she breaks his nose with a tankard. Nevertheless, it appears they are captured until Harwin, a Winterfell man, enters. He recognizes Arya and kneels before Lord Eddard Stark's youngest daughter.
