Chapter 11 Summary

Jaime sees the inn first. It appears to be deserted, so Jaime recommends that they stay there. Brienne agrees. However, when they open the door, they find a man with a crossbow there to welcome them. He explains that he buried the innkeeper and now runs the inn. He feeds them horse meat and explains that there are brigands about. He sells them horses and afterward, they break the shackles that hold Jaime's legs together and part ways. The innkeeper has given them advice but Jaime and Brienne do not follow it, believing that he is likely in league with brigands. Jaime and Brienne argue and she chastises him for soiling his honor. So many dream of becoming a member of the Kingsguard, but Jaime took that oath and killed Aerys Targaryen. Jaime remembers when he decided to join the Kingsguard. It had been Cersei's idea. Their father had taken her to court and she decided that if Jaime came to King's Landing, they could be together. However, when Jaime swore his oaths, Tywin resigned his position as Hand of the King and left King's Landing with Cersei. Jaime was alone then, as four different men tried their best to fill his father's shoes. Two were exiled, one killed, and Jaime killed the last when Robert's army laid siege to King's Landing. Jaime remembers when he killed Aerys and how he had the chance to capture Elia's child, proclaim it king, and give the Lannisters the rule of the realm while the child grew up. Instead, he had waited to see who would come to claim the throne.
