Chapter 10 Summary

Davos intends to kill Melisandre, the red priestess of Asshai. Why else did the Mother allow him to survive the battle and being drowned? When he next meets Salladhor Saan, Davos the Onion Knight declares that he will put his knife in her heart. Ser Davos argues that she sent the wildfires that destroyed the fleet. Salladhor Saan urges Davos to abandon his vengeance. He offers Davos a ship with which he will trade and become wealthy, but Davos refuses. Salladhor Saan tells Davos that he still has some sons left, and a wife. If Davos continues this course, he will be killed and it will be Salladhor Saan that takes his remains to his family. However, Davos insists that he return to Dragonstone, Stannis's seat. There, he finds Dragonmount smoking. It is said that no one is allowed to see Stannis but Melisandre. Together, they walk into the heat of the mountain. Davos convinces the guards at the gate to admit him. Inside, he meets Edric Storm, King Robert's bastard son. Edric is proud, and he reminds Davos of Robert and Renly. Ser Axell Florent, Stannis's Hand, arrives and calls on his men to seize Davos and take him to the dungeons. He declares that Davos means to kill Melisandre.
