Chapter 68 Summary

Daenerys has fever dreams in which she is running from one vision to the next. She dreams of Drogo, of Ser Jorah, and of Viserys. She dreams of her son: fire comes out of his mouth, burning everything, including himself. She finally dreams of her brother Rhaegar, the last dragon. When she wakes, she has little strength and falls back asleep again. She wakes again later, reaching for her dragon eggs, but again falls unconscious. When Dany does recover, she summons Mirri Maz Duur and Ser Jorah. They explain that her child was born blind and with dragon scales. The maegi explains that the price for life was death. When Dany goes to see what all of the death bought her, she finds Drogo. Though his body is alive, he is otherwise empty. Dany turns to the maegi and asks how she could have cheated her after Dany had saved her life. Mirri Maz Duur explains that three men had already raped her when Dany saved her. The Dothraki had already destroyed her god's temple. Now that Dany's child has died, the world will not be conquered by him. She refers to Drogo and asks what life is worth when everything else is gone. Mirri Maz Duur tells her that Drogo will return "when the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again and you bear a living child." Dany has the maegi taken away. That night, she takes Drogo away and tries to remind him of their first night together. When he does not respond, she uses a cushion to smother him.
