Chapter 62 Summary

Tyrion is late to join Lord Tywin and the other commanders for supper. Tywin informs Tyrion that Robb's host is now perhaps a day's journey from the Lannister army. Ser Kevan suggests that Tyrion and his clansmen fight in the vanguard. Tyrion thinks that his father and uncle have decided to finally do away with him. He is too proud to refuse the command, and so Tyrion declares that he will lead the van. However, they reply that they merely intend for his troops to fight under Ser Gregor, who will lead the van. Tyrion leaves the table without eating. Feeling alone, Tyrion seeks out Bronn, who is sitting with Tyrion's new servants. Tyrion has also been given a squire, Podrick Payne, a distant cousin of Ser Ilyn Payne. There is also a young woman, Shae. Tyrion takes her into his tent and they negotiate terms before sleeping together. After, Tyrion finds Bronn, who explains that he took Shae from a knight. Tyrion explains Bronn's next task: keep him alive during the coming battle. Tyrion returns to his tent, sleeps with Shae again, and wakes up to the sound of trumpets. Bronn explains that the Starks have arrived sooner than expected. Tyrion dons his armor and commands Shae to weep for him if he is killed. Tyrion and Bronn proceed to the van where they are commanded to hold the left along the river. Tyrion commands his clansmen, who shout "Halfman" as they prepare for battle. Tyrion fights well and even takes a knight hostage. Afterward, he confronts his father, who confirms Tyrion's suspicions that they were meant to lose the left. Ser Addam Marbrand arrives, announcing that Robb Stark was not in the battle. He and his horse instead travelled to Riverrun.
