Chapter 6 Summary
Catelyn is in her bedchambers after the welcoming feast. It is cold in the north, even in summer, but Winterfell is built over hot springs. She and Ned have just made love and they now begin discussing Robert’s proposal that Ned become Hand of the King. Ned suggests that he refuse the king. Catelyn explains that if Ned refuses, Robert will begin to question Ned’s loyalty. Ned maintains that he and Robert are friends, but Catelyn counters that Ned grew up with the man and now Robert is a king. They are interrupted by a knock at the door. Maester Luwin has come with a message. Earlier that evening, he returned to his chambers and found a box containing a lens. Upon further inspection, the Maester found a message addressed to Catelyn. It is from Lysa, Catelyn’s sister and Arryn’s widow. She claims that her husband was murdered by the Lannisters. Ned must agree to become the Hand of the King if he is to find Arryn’s murderer. In the meantime, Catelyn will remain in Winterfell to teach her fourteen year old son Robb how to rule. Rickon will stay as well, but the others will travel south with him. Though Ned would prefer Jon to stay with Robb, Catelyn refuses to allow Ned’s bastard to stay in Winterfell. Luwin points out that Jon is thinking of joining the Night’s Watch, solving the problem.
