Chapter 50 Summary

Arya and Syrio Forel duel using wooden swords that clack as Syrio instructs Arya. He tells the girl to move left but then strikes her from the other side. When Arya complains, he explains that words lie but the truth was there for Arya to see. Syrio explains that watching is not the same as seeing. He became first sword to the Sealord of Braavos when he showed that he could see. The Sealord had kept a menagerie of fantastic beasts; he showed applicants a fat cat. The men, thinking that the Sealord expected them to see a beast, named it a fabulous beast. Syrio had named the cat for what it was and had won his position. Arya understands and Syrio announces that it will be time to let her practice with Needle when they return to Winterfell. They are interrupted by the arrival of several soldiers. There is a knight of the Kingsguard, Ser Meryn, and several Lannister guardsmen. Syrio engages the Lannisters with his wooden sword and defeats them. Arya now realizes that he had only toyed with her when they dueled. Arya runs away as Syrio attacks the armored knight of the Kingsguard. She returns to the Tower of the Hand, retrieves her sword, and kills a man that comes to collect her. She then flees beneath the castle, sees the monsters and realizes that they are dragons. She continues running into the dark.
