Chapter 49 Summary

Eddard wakes up and wonders why Cersei still has not fled King's Landing. Arya arrives and asks if she can have one last lesson with Syrio Forel. Sansa arrives, asking permission to say farewell to Joffrey. Ned grants Arya's request but denies Sansa. Later, Grand Maester Pycelle arrives to announce Robert's death. Ned summons the small council. When they arrive, Ned learns that Renly has left the city. Ned presents them with Robert's will naming Ned Regent and Protector of the Realm. The meeting is interrupted with an announcement that Joffrey has summoned the council to the throne room. Ned recalls that Joffrey is of age to rule. When they arrive, Janos Slynt, Commander of the City Watch, is there, as are his men. Ned limps into the room with Littlefinger's support. Joffrey demands to be crowned within a fortnight. When Ned presents Robert's will, Cersei tears it up. She advises Ned to bend his knee before Joffrey. Ned refuses and names Stannis the true heir. Cersei calls this treason and swords are drawn. Ned tells Janos Slynt to take the queen into custody, but the City Watch attack Ned's men. Littlefinger, meanwhile, draws the Valyrian steel dagger that was used in the attack against Bran from Ned's waist. He holds it to Ned's throat.
