Chapter 48 Summary
Jon pretends to be surprised when Sam Tarly happily explains that he will be made a brother of the Night's Watch. Sam explains that he will help blind Maester Aemon with his ravens as well as with reading and writing. They meet with the other recruits that are about to be raised and together join the high officers of the Night's Watch in the sept. Lord Commander Mormont explains that regardless of how they came to the Wall, the past is now prologue. Now, they are all part of one house, and at the Wall they will serve the realm rather than a king or a lord. He informs the recruits that they will swear their vows when night falls. Halder will go to the Builders, while Pyp and Grenn will join the Rangers. Jon and Sam will join the Stewards, which irritates Jon until Sam explains that it means Jon will serve Lord Commander Mormont. Jon is being groomed for command. Although the other recruits will swear their vows in the sept, Jon and Sam will swear their oaths before the Old Gods. The weirwood grove lies beyond the Wall in the haunted forest. That night, Jon and Sam swear their oath. They take Ghost with them, but when they prepare to return to the Wall, Ghost arrives with a hand in his jaw.
