Chapter 35 Summary

Eddard has concluded his search at the brothel. Littlefinger is joking with a black woman, Chataya, who owns the brothel. As they leave, Littlefinger jokes that brothels are actually better investments than ships. As they leave, Ned recalls Lyanna's claim that Robert would never keep to one bed after they were married. Ned had defended Robert, though he knew that his best friend had already fathered one bastard while in the Vale. Love might be sweet, Lyanna had said, but it did not change a man's nature. It was difficult to argue with Lyanna's words now given that he has just seen another of Robert's bastard children, this one a girl named Barra. The mother asks Ned to tell the king that she is waiting for him. As they return from the Red Keep, Ned's three guards are surrounded by Lannisters. Jaime reveals himself, announcing that they are looking for Tyrion. Ned announces that if Jaime kills him, Catelyn will kill Tyrion. Jaime tells his men to let Ned live but to kill his men. Ned's horse falls, breaking his leg. Ned watches as the Lannisters kill his men. Jory fights well but is finally pulled down from his horse and killed. When Ned wakes, Grand Maester Pycelle is giving him milk of the poppy to ease the pain.
