Chapter 33 Summary

Eddard is with the Small Council and King Robert. The king has just learned that Daenerys Targaryen is pregnant and has ordered her killed. Ned tries to convince Robert that he will dishonor himself if he has the girl killed, but the members of the council, excepting Ser Barristan, agree with the king. A pregnant Targaryen poses a threat to the realm, and one assassination might prevent the deaths of thousands of men. They next begin to argue over how she should be killed (assassins are so expensive), and a disgusted Ned declares that he will not serve Robert in this. When he leaves the council, he finds his steward, Vayon Poole, and tells him that he is Hand no longer. Now they must prepare to leave for Winterfell. Vayon thinks it will take two weeks to prepare for the journey, so Ned decides that he will go ahead with the girls and a few guards. Perhaps, Ned thinks, he should travel by ship and visit Stannis along the way. Stannis most likely knows why Jon Arryn was killed. Ned reflects that he came close to solving the murder, but not close enough. He gives the order to prepare to depart for Winterfell. Littlefinger arrives before Ned can do anything else, and he offers to take Ned to the brothel that Jory has been searching for if he stays one more night.
