Chapter 28 Summary

Catelyn and Ser Rodrik are traveling north through the Riverlands where Catelyn grew up. Knights and lords are riding south to King's Landing to compete in the Hand's Tourney, but while Catelyn recognizes them as her father's liegemen, they do not recognize her. She is just another mud-splattered traveler. Catelyn and Rodrik decide that they can risk staying at Masha Heddle's inn, where there will be a fire. The inn lies at a crossroads along the kingsroad. To the west lies Riverrun, her father's castle, while Catelyn's sister Lysa rules at the Eyrie, to the east. Catelyn knows this inn well since she stayed here often as a girl, but now she is just another traveler. They take the last two rooms and are told that they had better make it to supper on time if they want to eat. At supper, they meet Marillion, a singer on his way to King's Landing. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Tyrion Lannister, who recognizes Catelyn. With no other alternative at hand, Catelyn announces her identity. Next, she identifies swordsmen that should be loyal to her father and when they rise, Catelyn announces that Tyrion conspired to murder her son. At Winterfell, Catelyn declares, Tyrion will pay for his crimes. The men draw their swords.
