Chapter 40 Summary

The Princess in the Tower, Arianne, takes solace in the fact that her prison is a gentle one. After their defeat, Darkstar escaped, and Hotah refused to listen to her pleas during the return. She was not taken before her father in the Tower of the Sun, but was instead taken to the Spear Tower. Her prison comes with books, red wine, and a beautiful view. She reflects on her fellow conspirators, who have been sent to Ghaston Grey, a prison island off the coast of Dorne. Hotah told her that someone informed on her plan, which means that someone Arianne loved betrayed her. And Ser Arys died because of it. Days later, Areo Hotah arrives and takes her to Prince Doran. There, he explains that Myrcella is still alive, though Darkstar did try to kill her. Myrcella has lost an ear and will carry a scar. Doran explains that now Ser Balon Swann comes to Sunspear with the head of Gregor Clegane. He is doing his best to delay Swann's arrival and discovery that Myrcella is maimed and Ser Arys dead. Arianne realizes that her father needs her to convince Myrcella to lie to Swann. She confronts him with her worries that she will not inherit Dorne. Doran explains that he had intended her to marry a man across the Narrow Sea but those plans were ruined. Now, he has sent Quentyn across the Narrow Sea. He explains that he wants vengeance as he passes her a dragon piece from the board game cyvasse and whispers "Fire and blood," the words of House Targaryen.
