Chapter 20 Summary

Brienne follows Nimble Dick Cragg east out of Maidenpool in search of the fool and his two companions. Over days, they make their way toward the sea and then past the Brunes' castle. They finally leave roads behind and ride through a pine forest. Along the way, Brienne and Nimble Dick exchange stories. She tells him about a local hero of Tarth, Ser Galladon of Morne, the Perfect Knight. The Maiden fell in love with him and gave him a magic sword that he only used thrice because it would otherwise have given him an unfair advantage over mortal men. Dick replies that Galladon's last words must have been "I should have used the magic sword," and Brienne laughs. When they make their way out of the forest, they come upon the Whispers, a decrepit castle over the sea. They can hear the sea whispering to them, and when Brienne is about to enter, she hears Galladon's last words. She unsheathes Oathkeeper and enters the castle. Inside are three of Vargo Hoat's Brave Companions, including Shagwell the fool, who is armed with a morningstar. Brienne tells them that she is looking for Eddard Stark's daughter and they tell her to seek the Hound, Sandor Clegane, who was taking a Stark girl to Riverrun. In the fighting that follows, Shagwell kills Nimble Dick and then Brienne kills him and his two companions. She tosses her payment, two gold coins, into Nimble Dick's grave and apologizes, saying that she never trusted him. As they prepare to leave, Ser Hyle Hunt reveals himself. Lord Tarly commanded him to follow Brienne and to bring Sansa Stark back to him.
