Chapter 62 Summary
Sansa is dismayed when both Ser Lancel and Osney Kettleblack report that the battle is over. Stannis's men are at the gates of the city. Lancel can barely contain his fury as he tells Cersei that her commands to remove King Joffrey from the gates caused the men to break. Now, Joffrey commands a group of archers and Cersei commands them to bring him to her in Maegor's Holdfast. Lancel grows even angrier and points out that Joffrey will die if they lose the city. It would be better for him to remain visible so that they men will continue to fight. Cersei commands Osney to bring Joffrey; then she pushes past Lancel and leaves. Sansa helps the disillusioned Lancel up, even though he is a Lannister. When the women demand to know what is going on, Sansa does her best to comfort them. Dontos tells her to go to her bedchamber until the fighting is over. Along the way, she sees the Hound, who is drunk and furious. He tells her that his time in King's Landing is over now and he wishes that he had killed Tyrion a long time ago. He holds a blade to Sansa's throat and commands her to sing for him. She sings a hymn and when she finishes, the Hound has tears on his cheeks. She returns to her bedchamber and looks out at the ruin of war. Dontos enters the chamber and tells her that against all odds, Stannis has been defeated. It is said that a force led by Renly himself attacked Stannis from behind. The host was led by Tywin Lannister, Mace Tyrell, and Randyll Tarly, but when men saw Renly, many knelt before him as they abandoned Stannis.
