Chapter 52 Summary
Sansa is still haunted by the day Princess Myrcella left King's Landing and she was attacked by the mob. In the godswood, she now encourages Ser Dontos to take her away while everyone is focused on Stannis. Though Stannis is not yet at the gates of King's Landing, his vanguard has arrived. Stannis and his army, meanwhile, are setting fire to the woods around King's Landing in order to destroy Tyrion's clansmen. Ser Dontos tells Sansa that although the Red Keep is less well defended, the city remains locked up tight. There are no ships on which they can even leave. Ser Dontos is full of news because no one guards their words around a fool. He also reports to Varys in exchange for gold. Sansa encounters the Hound, Sandor Clegane, on her way home. He explains to her that there are no gods and that strength rules the world. Sansa flees, horrified by the thought that all of the songs might be false. The next morning, she wakes and discovers her bedsheets red with her menstrual blood. She tries to burn the sheets, but fails. When she next sees Cersei, the queen tells her that Sansa will never love Joffrey but she will love his children. The queen thinks Sansa stupid for even believing in love. She explains that love is a poison that will kill her.
