Chapter 50 Summary

Theon wakes in the middle of the night. Kyra lies naked beside him and Wex sleeps at the foot of the bed. Theon wonders why he feels unsettled and realizes that he can no longer hear the direwolves howling. He goes to his men and commands them to search Winterfell. They find two dead men. When the northerners are summoned, Theon recalls all he did with them while he lived in Winterfell and he wonders why they hate him so much now. After all, he punished the men that raped their women and he only murdered the septon as a sacrifice to the Drowned God. Now, he sees that Bran, Rickon, the direwolves, and the Reeds are missing, as are Osha and Hodor. Theon worries over what will happen if Asha arrives with more men and discovers that he has lost the Starks. Reek suggests that Theon flay the northerners to see if they have any information. The Boltons used to do exactly this, even to their enemies, the Starks, until the Dreadfort bent the knee to Winterfell. Theon assembles a party to search for the escapees at first light, but although they track the party to a stream, they cannot tell where the Starks went afterward. Theon spends the day searching and finds nothing. Reek suggests that they are hiding in an old mill. Theon does not understand until Reek shows Theon a bag with Stark clothes and a wolf brooch inside. Theon understands what pale-eyed Reek intends, sends his men back to Winterfell, and proceeds to the mill.
