Chapter 36 Summary
Tyrion sits with the small council, which consists only of himself, Cersei, Varys, and Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger) now that Tyrion has removed Grand Maester Pycelle and Janos Slynt. They have received word that Renly is dead, though no one can say exactly who murdered him. Tyrion decides that Stannis must be behind Renly's death since he is the one who has gained the most from it. Most of Renly's lords have joined Stannis, though not all of them. The Tyrells, for example, have returned to Highgarden. Tyrion proposes that they wed Joffrey to Margaery Tyrell in order to forge an alliance. Cersei thinks that her son will object, but Tyrion points out that Margaery is attractive and "beddable." When Cersei states that her son does not care about such things, Tyrion wonders aloud why Joffrey had Sansa stripped naked. Cersei suggests that they send one of Tyrion's people south: Ser Jacelyn Bywater or Tyrion himself. Tyrion returns that Cersei should go. Littlefinger volunteers to go, and he asks for men, provisions, and a letter granting him the authority to make the match. They decide to let him go, though Tyrion cannot figure out what Littlefinger's scheme is. Afterward, Cersei compliments Tyrion and even kisses his brow. Tyrion is shocked, and he realizes that Cersei must be planning some scheme.
