Chapter 35 Summary
Bran is summoned to Maester's Luwin's turret. There, he learns that Robb has won a great victory over Ser Stafford Lannister. However, Bran agrees when the Walders declare that Tywin is the true threat. Ser Stevron Frey, Lord Frey's heir, died in the battle, but the Walders do not care. They instead discuss succession. Maester Luwin chides them, but Bran finds himself recalling Jojen's green dream. He goes to the Reeds a believer. Jojen tells Bran that he has seen salt water drowning Winterfell in one of his dreams. Bran confesses that he dreams as well. Sometimes, he is a wolf, eating squirrels. Sometimes, a three-eyed crow and a great tree ask him to open his third eye. Jojen identifies Bran as a "warg" or shapechanger, and he tells Bran that he must learn to open his third eye when he is awake. Ser Rodrik returns with Reek after killing Roose Bolton's bastard. The situation is difficult since the Bastard of Bolton appears to have married Lady Hornwood and consummated the marriage. Though such matters done under threat are not legally valid, Roose Bolton might still demand the lands as his own. Now, the Boltons and the Manderlys are fighting over the land and Ser Rodrik does not have the power to stop them. Bran tells them of his dream and Maester Luwin points out that there are raids along the shore and they will be careful. When Bran tells Jojen, the greenseer is unimpressed. Once he has a green dream, it comes true. He tells Bran that he once dreamt of Reek killing Bran and Rickon. Nothing can be done to stop it.
