Chapter 34 Summary

Jon notices that Lord Commander Mormont is feeling his age. Still, the Old Bear continues to give orders and his latest is that the men of the Night's Watch will set up camp on the Fist of the First Men. It is a ring fort atop a hill, a place that everyone agrees is strong. They will fortify the hill and wait there for Qhorin Halfhand and his men from Shadow Tower. They will also wait for Mance Rayder to come down from the Frostfangs. If he truly does have a large army, he will need to follow the Milkwater River and pass the hill. Lord Commander Mormont refuses to allow Thoren to send out his rangers, arguing that he will not lose more men. That night, Jon joins the other men and listens as one ranger complains of the smell of the haunted forest. It smells "cold." Jon recalls when the dead men attacked him and wonders what is lurking at the base of the hill. Later than evening, Jon's direwolf, Ghost, finds Jon. Jon follows the direwolf outside the camp and into the forest. He digs a bundle of obsidian daggers, sometimes called "dragonglass," out of the bundle. There is also a horn full of arrowheads. Beneath it all, Jon finds a scrap of black cloak. It belonged to a man of the Night's Watch, and it was buried recently.
