Chapter 29 Summary
Tyrion is up late reading reports from Varys and accounts from Littlefinger when his squire, Podrick Payne, enters. Lancel has come with a message from Cersei. Tyrion rises, though slowly, and goes to see the young knight. Ser Lancel gives Tyrion a royal decree from Queen Regent Cersei; it calls for Grand Maester Pycelle’s release. When Lancel threatens Tyrion, Tyrion explains that he knows the role Lancel played in murdering King Robert. Lancel had given Robert strongwine so that he would fail to kill the boar. Now, Tyrion guesses aloud, Lancel is sleeping with the queen as well. He can see in Lancel's eyes that he has guessed correctly. Tyrion threatens to tell Joffrey that Lancel has killed his father and is sleeping with his mother, and Lancel breaks. Tyrion agrees to release Pycelle, but he expects Lancel’s loyalty from now on, which means that Lancel will report to Tyrion on Cersei. Tyrion now knows that he has Lancel. Afterward, Tyrion travels to Chataya’s and then through the secret passage to Shae. They sleep together and Tyrion reflects on how much he loves the power he now controls. He also loves Shae, with whom he can forget about Tysha, his first love.
