Chapter 27 Summary

Daenerys arrives in Qarth, a spectacular city in the East. The warlock Pyatt Pree tells Dany that it is the greatest city in the world, and it does seem to be the richest. The city is surrounded by three walls, each of which is heavily ornamented. There are water fountains in every square. Children stream flowers in Dany’s path as a welcome. Xaro Xhoan Daxos, the merchant, takes Dany back to his palace and gives her tiny khalasar one wing to themselves. Dany is amazed by its wealth. Before she leaves, Quaithe tells Dany to beware of the lust men will have for her dragons and Ser Jorah agrees. He wishes to protect Dany like a child and he lusts after her as a women, but he does not see her as his queen. She wishes she could love him more, but she cannot. She sends her men out to inspect the city. Ser Jorah returns with a captain who tells her that Robert Baratheon is dead and that the great houses are warring with each other now. Dany feels that this changes everything, though she knows that she cannot simply ride into the Seven Kingdoms and expect the people to rally to her cause. She tells herself that the gods have led her to Qarth, and that she will have to survive its traps and find what she is looking for if she is to conquer Westeros.
