Chapter 24 Summary

Theon visits the shore and inspects his newly made longship. He looks around at the other longships, which have come in by the dozen. His father will strike at the north very soon. He sees a woman and decides to pursue her. She introduces herself as Esgred, the shipwright's wife and says that she is newly with child. Undaunted, Theon flirts with her and finds that she has a fast wit. He names his ship in her honor, the Sea Bitch, and he offers to take her back to his father's castle. She agrees. As they travel back to the inn where his horse, Smiler, is stabled, Esgred greets the men she sees, explaining that all of the rowers love the shipwright's wife. They gather Theon's squire, Wex, and travel back to Pyke. There, Theon learns that Esgred is actually Lady Asha, his older sister. Theon is humiliated and returns to his room. He is drunk by the time he goes to the feast, where Asha humiliates him in front of the men. His father summons his uncles and Asha to his room to share his plans for war. Theon will lead eight ships to harry the coast while Asha will take Deepwood Motte. Theon's uncle, Victarion, will lead the main attack. Though Theon has planned on becoming King of the Iron Islands, it seems that his father intends for Asha to rule in Theon's stead.
