Chapter 17 Summary

Tyrion is eating breakfast with Grand Maester Pycelle. When Pycelle's young serving girl is sent away, Tyrion instructs the old man to send a message to Prince Doran Martell, the lord of the Dorne, which is in the deep south of Westeros. Tyrion is careful not say aloud what is in the message. When Pycelle leaves, Tyrion inspects the maester's potions and takes one bottle. When he finishes, he meets Littlefinger. He suggests that Littlefinger travel to the Vale of Arryn to convince Lysa Arryn to send her bannermen to help the Lannisters fight King Renly. Littlefinger then should offer to marry Myrcella to Robert Arryn, Lysa's sickly child. Finally, Tyrion meets Varys that evening. Thanks to his informants, Varys already knows that he has met with Grand Maester Pycelle and Littlefinger. He can infer a great deal of what Tyrion might have offered Doran Martell, a man that has hated the Lannisters since Ser Gregor Clegane raped and murdered Princess Elia after killing her children during the rebellion. The most important part of the offer, since Myrcella is already promised to Lysa Arryn, must be Prince Tommen. The plan has potential, but Varys points out that Cersei could disrupt it. Tyrion replies that any man who reveals his plans would reveal himself as an enemy.
