Chapter 12 Summary

Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, leads her followers along the path of the comet, which the Dothraki call shierak qiya. She decides that since the comet arrived on the same nights her dragons did, it is her guide. Besides, every other direction will lead them to a khalasar, led by men that will kill her and her followers. They travel into the red waste, where her followers begin slowly dying. As the people die, however, the dragons grow. Dany names them Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. The journey ends when they reach an abandoned city. There, they find water and dates. Dany asks Ser Jorah about his past and he tells her that he married twice. His first wife died in childbirth. He met his second wife after he won a tourney. She was beautiful but when he took her home to Bear Island, she was disappointed in it. He beggared himself and his honor trying to please her but still lost her. When Dany asks what she looked like, Ser Jorah says that she looked a little like her. Dany realizes that Ser Jorah loves her, but she does not love him. Besides, she knows that she is barren, so perhaps no man will ever love her again. She sends her riders out before her but the first two return without having found a new destination. Finally, Jhogo returns with three followers from Qarth. The first is a warlock, Pyatt Pree, the second a merchant, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, and the third is Quaithe of the Shadow. They have come to see dragons.
