What are some good end-of-the-chapter writing or classroom activities from "White Tigers"?
My students have finished reading "White Tigers." After we read the first part, we analyzed selected passages in the chapter and looked at the symbolism. Then we had a discussion about her fantasy life compared to her American life.
Kingston takes the myth of Fa Mu Lan and twists the tale to embody her fantasy life. Since your class has discussed this fantasy life as compared to Kingston's American life, you might consider having students mimic Kingston's thought in this chapter. She chose a popular tale from Chinese culture, so explore some popular tales from the cultures of the students that you have in your class. After sharing these cultural tales, ask students to imagine their fantasy lives in terms of the heroes and heroines from the tales. This could turn into a writing activity in which the students use "White Tigers" as a mentor text to draft their own tales in which they narrate their fantasy lives embodied in a cultural tale.
