In accord with post #9, a sense of humor often wins over people and grabs their attention to the more serious side of what is said in jest. The difficulty with humor comes in the choice of humor a teacher employs. Teachers need to be sensitive to the level of humor just as they are aware of the level of learning in their classrooms.  For instance, more mature and intellectual students who are well read will respond positively to satiric remarks, but the less mature and more challenged students often perceive this type of humor as "making fun" of them. One test for the humor which will appeal to a group is to have them read a Mark Twain story that has his characteristic humor.  If the group finds it amusing, then a more sophisticated humor such as satire can be used.  Otherwise....

Humor has its place. I think kids enjoy classes where humor is used, as long as it doesn't get in the way of the lessons. Even the most serious students enjoy a joke or too. When I was a student, the teachers who used humor often helped me remember the concepts better. Storytelling, humorous or not, helps connect the concept to the student. I use humor, often corny humor, all the time. It also makes things interesting for me. I also cannot help myself.

I think a good sense of humor is essential in the classroom - as long as it is not at anyone's expense. I like to share a joke when appropriate, but I cringe as a teacher and a learner when sarcasm is used to put others down. Its a rule not to do this in my classroom.

I think that a sense of humor is almost a necessity for success in the classroom. A teacher is not a comedian, but a few jokes or light words to break up the lesson are usually welcomed by all. However I do agree with #4 that it needs to be natural - students never react well to a fake, even if it is well-meant.

Teachers should be true to their own personalities, as phonies are very easy for students of all ages to sniff out. If humor is something teachers can use to meet students at a certain level, then so be it. If not, they can look pretty bad trying to be funny. But I do think that some of the best teachers I have known are, in fact very funny people.

Humor is a great quality. Hence, if you can incorporate this in your teaching, it can be a powerful tool. Moreover, it makes learning fun. And to be honest, some students need this hook to keep them going. So, I am all in favor of humor, as long as this humor is rooted in good teaching as well.

I think that most students think that I am funny.  Therefore, I definitely think that it is a good way to be.  I think that it helps the students to feel relaxed in my classes.  I also think that it makes them more inclined to pay attention in my classes because humor can kind of break the monotony of class.

I think that teachers who can be fun are at an advantage because students will be more engaged in their classes.  Of course, teachers must not take this to extremes and must be serious when it is called for.

I like having a funny teacher in the classroom. This is because I am able to relax more when my teachers have a sense of humor. I always do well with the teachers that are funny and more laidback, than with the teachers that are very serious.

its good idea to be funny to get interest but within limits is very good for a teacher . Being too much funny can decrease teacher reputition.

....so true, that's always my view of a teacher...to be moderate and know one's limits!!

I prefer funny and fun teacher. I got many fun and funny teacher here. One english teacher would dance in random. Some teacher will make jokes of other. My opinion teachers should be funny. So it would be less boring speech everydays.

There is a difference between being funny and being a clown. Some schools insist that the students laugh at all times and as a teacher, your job is to be a clown or create funny situations, whether they are embarrassing to you or not.I absolutely refuse to do that.

There is also a level of comfort which comes along as the school year goes on.I find once the teachers and the students feel comfortable with each other, humour becomes second nature. The reason is the relationship gets better and both parties have a good idea what the limits to conversations are.The students will therefore understand and accept the teacher's personality and may even find somethings about him/her funny, and vice-versa.

Being a student, Icpmletely adore funny teachers. It makes us students realize that life is a journey to laugh all along it - it doesnt matter what age u r - just be you. Funny teachers also encourage un-interactive students in class for they are encouraged & the teacher doesn't seem any more scary to them. What is more is that students can put their full confidence in thier teachers and always rely on them for help of any sorts!

I love it teachers who are funny because the jokes relax your mind and help you to concentrate. I wish history teachers had a sense of humor because it would make the classes easier to bear.

OF COURSE ONE MUST HAVE A SENSE OF  HUMOUR IN HIM . IT MAKES HIM STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD. FOR A TEACHER ESPECIALLY HUMOUR IS THE BEST WAY TO BE POPULAR AMONG KIDS . KIDS TOO LOVE TO BE UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A TEACHER WHO IS NOT ALWAYS BOSSING AROUND  . WHILE LEARNING UNDER AN ABLE TEACHER , ONE IS MORE ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS

OR TO PUT ANSWERS TO ITS QUESTIONS READILY WITHOUT THE FEAR OF BEING CHIDED OR LAUGHED AT . BUT OFTEN  A STUDENT TENDS TO DISREGARD OR STOP REVERING AN OVERFRIENDLY  , CARING AND STUDENT FRIENDLY TEACHER. ONE MUST WATCH OUT FOR SUCH ATHING . HUMOUR IS THAT QUALITY WHICH IS JUST LIKE WATER IN SAND . A SMALL AMOUNT MAKES A PARFECT CLAY , BUT TOO MUCH SPOILS IT.

Teachers who are funny tend to get their point across with the students better than those who aren't. Students who can relate to what the teacher is saying are more likely to take in the information being said, than those teachers who are boring and mundane.

Intelligence and humour go side by side and I have not seen a dumb. Students need a break and a light humour at an appropriate time can not only provide break but can make them more attentive in the class. This is my way and I like it that way though I have come across some very good teachers in my student life who were very serious - most of them teaching Pure and Applied Mathematics.
