I agree. I am Team Peeta. Although I did not always agree with the choices that Peeta made, the choices Gale made were worse. He committed horrible atrocities just to win the war. Peeta stayed true to Katniss from the beginning.
Characters (and people in general) often end up with someone who is able to balance them out. Katniss and Gale both become angry. They both tend to strike quickly and without considering the consequences. Peeta is the opposite. He takes his time and rarely reacts quickly. Peeta and Katniss have been through so much together, it is hard to imagine them with anyone else. Perhaps if the hunger games had never taken place, Katniss and Gale might have made a good match. Both characters have changed so much from the opening of the story that they no longer balance each other. I think the author made the right choice when she allowed Peeta and Katniss to end up together.
While somewhat conflicted, I find myself in the Peeta group. The biggest reason is that he and Kat went through a kind of Hell that no one else could really understand. They needed each other. I do find it very ironic, however, that the one thing that both Kat and Peeta despised was the one thing that brought them together. Without the Hunger Games or the manipulation of the Capitol it is very likely that Peeta and Kat would have never become involved.
I am Team Peeta. I was very moved by the bond they forged while in the first Games and the tenderness they each had for the other. There is something very compelling about facing the circumstances they were in and coming out together that I think forever bonds them.
I was team Gale. All the way. However, ever since the first book, if they stood a chance, Gale would have been selected / volunteered for District 12 tributes instead of Peeta. Plus Katniss associated the dandelion with her father, her determination to survive - and eventually with Peeta, the 'boy with the bread'. From the inception, their meeting was pivotal.
Katniss and Gale are very close, their bond forged due to mutual circumstance and their shared hunting and he was the only one outside her family whom she trusted - enough to leave her family in his capable hands. However, Gale took a while to develop and express his feelings for her. He realized it out of jealosy from Darius, and when she was carted off to the Games I believe he was about to say "Remember I [love you]." However I really appreciated their trust between each other, and how seamlessly they operated alongside each other, silently, and in combat. They seemed to know each other inside out.
Even up till their Capitol Mission, I believe Gale and Peeta didn't even know who Katniss would choose. I realized Katniss was leaning toward Peeta more because when they bombed the surface of District 13, Katniss envisioned herself as Buttercup chasing after the light [Peeta] she wanted so badly to have and protect - and was overwhelmed when they rescued him, and distraught when he attacked her. Mental strain is always hard to understand, especially what happened with Peeta and hijacking. They both survived.
