Every story I have read about three wishes has described horrible side effects, so I think I'd be scared if I had three wishes. There seems to be no way to word the wishes so that they are not disasters. I guess my first wish would be that there would be no bad side effects from my other wishes, which would be to have my projects work and my health.
- Excellent health for myself and my family: I truly believe that 'health is the best wealth.' Being in great health really increases the quality of your life. Money is actually secondary in this case. There are many illnesses that all the money in the world cannot cure.
- Lifetime financial stability: Finances are very important. If you can't pay your bills, then life is extremely stressful.
- Safety and protection: It's a very violent world. I'd wish for my family and me to be protected at all times and never be victims of crimes.
I guess everyone considers this fantasy at one time or another. You should realize, of course, that wishes coming true may not always have the effect that one expects. You should read the W. W. Jacobs short story, "The Monkey's Paw," to see how wishes that come true can be of a horrible nature. Like most people (as well as Mr. White in "The Monkey's Paw"), I would use one wish for financial (monetary) security--not only for myself but for my family. Such a wish could provide me with any kind of material needs that I could hope for. I would also probably wish for good health, since I am 55 years old and (presumably) have my best years behind me. For my third wish, I would probably use it to in some manner help the world around me; right this minute, I might use it to wish away the troubles in Japan caused by the recent tsunami.
If you are going to apply to a university, you will surely need to use your own wishes. The university is trying to get a feeling about who you are as a person. Only you can give answers that will do you any good on an application.
For me personally, there are many types of wishes I might make. I suppose that the most obvious at this point in my life has to do with my children. I hope, more than anything, that they will be able to grow up healthy and in a good situation in their lives (decent jobs, happy relationships). That's the first thing I would wish for.
If I were going to wish for something for myself, I would wish to be able to control my weight more easily. It has always been a struggle for me and I think that if I could control it more easily my health would improve in the long term without so much effort on my part.
Then, of course, I might wish for something that would help the whole world. I think I might wish for better understanding between people of various religions. I think that this could go a long way towards reducing the level of conflict in our world today.
