Write a persuasive paragraph on the ways that celebrities and media personalities influence the behavior of others, both positively and negatively.
Persuasive writing is writing that is meant to state an argument and persuade the reader to agree with the argument. In your paragraph, make an argument that celebrities and media personalities influence both positive and negative health behaviors in others. Your examples will support your argument.
Before you write your paragraph, brainstorm different ways that celebrities and media personalities can influence individuals. Think of some ways which an individual’s behaviors can be affected by what he or she sees and hears in the media.
I assume you are asking for help on writing a persuasive/argumentative essay on "the ways that celebrities and media personalities influence the behavior of others, both positively and negatively." You get to define celebrities in many ways, as that category includes musicians, actors, athletes, and generally anyone with a recognizable name and following.
Your directions offer you some good advice. The first step is to make a list of the ways you think celebrities influence people's behaviors in positive ways (set a good example, promote healthy or positive causes, speak out against negative behaviors) and in negative ways (set an bad example by their words and actions, promote negative causes). To be the most helpful, your list should include as many specifics as possible. In other words, I gave you general categories, now you need to fill in the blanks with examples you are familiar with: celebrities getting arrested for various behaviors, etc.
Unfortunately, the negative behaviors are far more publicized and remembered than the positives, so you may need to work a little harder to think of or find those. Perhaps things like being faithfully married for many years (like Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson), supporting positive causes (like Sara McLachlan supporting abused animals), or speaking out against bad behavior (like Bill Cosby has done with young black men) will be the strongest things you can find.
Once you make the list, you will have to choose an organization. For this particular essay, you have many choices: three kinds of behaviors (both positive and negative), three types of celebrities (and how they have positive and negative impact), or whatever else seems sensible to you. Using the examples form your list, make a quick outline and then you are ready to write.
For some more specific help on this particular type of essay, I have attached an excellent eNotes site (below). One last reminder is to make sure you write logically and persuasively. Among other things, it offers this good advice:
In middle school they call it "persuasion"; in college they call it "argumentation"—so what’s the difference? Expectation. Your instructor is less interested in what side you take than in how you take that side, how you analyze the issue and organize your response. Forget about whether you’re right and someone else is wrong; writing a good paper is not a competition. Instead, focus on your “line of argument”—how you develop your paper by meeting your audience’s needs, integrating solid evidence, and demonstrating a solid understanding of the topic.
