Write a paragraph about any current event using Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style (syntactical structure especially) and language (diction, imagery, tone, etc.) as seen in his novel The Scarlet Letter.
As far as sentence structure is concerned, Hawthorne applies the use of compound, compound/complex, and complex sentences throughout his stories. This means that he tends to link a few different phrases together with the use of commas before using independent clauses properly on both sides of a semi-colon. This creates long sentence structures that are rich with figures of speech to articulate the points that he wishes to create. The following is an example of such a structure:
The young minister, on ceasing to speak, had withdrawn a few steps from the group, and stood with his face partially concealed in the heavy folds of the window curtain; while the shade of his figure, which the sunlight cast upon the floor, was tremulous with the vehemence of his appeal (55).
In order to create Hawthorne's tone of voice, one should also consider using polysyllabic words within the sentences needed for the assignment. Notice in the above-quoted passage the words "tremulous" and "vehemence" which help to shape the sound and communication of the scene.
For this assignment, one could simply take a sentence from Hawthorne's story and insert phrases and clauses into the pattern as shown above. All one would have to do is create new words that apply to the assignment (i.e. current event). For example, one could write: "President Obama, upon finishing his speech, had walked to the side of the room, and stood thinking about how to help the economy grow; while he stood pondering in the sunlight, his tall shadow cast a darkness about the room and was tremulous with the vehemence of his orders."
(Remember not to plagiarize, of course, by not repeating more than three words in a row. This was just an example.)
