Santiago, the protagonist of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, undergoes a process of maturity and spirtual development. He first rejects the life his father has chosen for him in the priesthood then leaves behind his life as a shepherd to search for treasure in Egypt. While his confidence and enthusiasm remain prominent throughout his journey, he experiences a significant breakthrough when he realizes that the seemingly impossible task of becoming the wind is simply a matter of accepting that all things in the universe are one. His journey comes full circle when he discovers that the treasure he was seeking was in his hometown in Spain all along. Although his hometown has remained the same, Santiago's perception of life there has been radically transformed.
