I think that the strongest way to approach this topic is to identify particular and specific works that highlight the gender dynamic. It is fairly broad to examine each genre of literature, so identification of specific works from different time periods might be essential.  Once you have identified works from different time frames, engaging in analysis of the characterizations of women characters in contrast with male characters in the works.  Analyzing how they respond to particular power structures, how their voice is depicted and/ or asserted, as well as the cultural implications of such depictions will help create a compelling rendering of the gender predicament through literature.  It would also be important to gain insight into the culture and political setting of the time of each works' creation, as this will help gain a greater understanding of how the work reflects the cultural gender perspective.
