Louisa May Alcott’s story “Scarlet Stockings” tells of the friendship, budding romance, and eventual engagement of Belle and Harry. To show the high-minded Belle that he is a serious person, Harry goes to fight in the Civil War. When he returns, he tricks Belle into confessing her love and they are engaged. Two aspects of the story that connect the nineteenth century and today’s time are gendered conventions and military service.
