I need to complete an assignment responding to the following prompt:
Write a 2-3 paragraph anonymous newspaper editorial article as if you are Hester Prynne. Include details on your views about adultery, on love and happiness, and comment on the concept of public shaming. Make sure you include character traits true to Hester, the scarlet letter, her feelings towards Dimmesdale, and having Pearl.
The first problem you may be encountering in doing this assignment is that it seems to request you to complete two somewhat incompatible tasks, the first being writing an "anonymous" editorial and the second including many personal details about Hester. If we imagine that this is written in Hester's voice but without revealing her identity, you might want to have her use phrases such as "my own experience of suffering leads me to feel ..."
The major decision you will need to make in this assignment is whether you wish to portray Hester as a sort of subversive feminist or a "fallen woman" who redeems herself through suffering. Either of these two interpretations can be supported with textual evidence.
Next, you will need to invent a situation for writing the editorial. In general, newspaper editorials respond to some sort of current event. Thus you will need to think of why Hester is writing this. Is she ill and does she want to share what she has learned before she dies? Has her daughter just reached puberty? Is another woman on trial for adultery?
