World History final exam

So one of the topics below is going to be on my final exams, and i can bring a "plan" to the test. The plan can consist of your thesis, your 3 supporting points, 1~2 historical events to support your supporting points, and maybe a conclusion(I'll do this but it will be good if you can do this for me) So like the format will be:

ex.The social, political and economic impacts of the industrial revolution was blahblahblah

1.first point

-supporting detail

2.second point

-supporting detail

3.third point

-supporting detail

Please do it with above format for all these questions. THIS IS NOT AN ESSAY BUT A PARAGRAPH!

1. What were the social, political and economic impacts of the Industrial Revolution?

2. How did nationalism affect the world both positively and negatively in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s?

3. Do the benefits of Imperialism outweigh the costs?

4. How did new ideas in art, literature and science challenge the traditional ways of thinking and living during the inter-world war period?

5. How were the tensions between the US and USSR expressed after WWII?

You can argue either way about imperialism as far as cost vs. benefit, but the costs outweighing the benefits is the easier thesis to argue, in my opinion.  So consider the international conflict and competition caused by imperialism, from the race to colonize Africa to World War I, and the millions of lives lost, billions of dollars squandered, and the legacy left to Africa which they still suffer from today.

One social impact of the Industrial Revolution is the change that was made to the family unit and to personal safety. For one thing, all members of the family unit were suddenly potential workers answering to non-familial employers, everyone from the youngest child to the oldest member. For another thing, personal safety degraded because of horrific working conditions and the characteristics of industrial equipment, for example, furnaces for steel and gears and mechanisms for industrial looms.

My best advice in a case like this is to take notes of your points, based on reviewing your class notes and your textbook and readings, and then devise a thesis from there. In other words, work backward. Since you have the advantage of planning, your instructor is going to expect a better-planned essay.

I agree with post #4 that we can't do your work for you, but point you in the right direction.  Your question #4 you might consider the fact that the whole idea of progress and rationality disappeared after the horrors of World War I. The literature, art, and science challenged previous assumptions of correctness and propriety. You might consider abstract art such as the work of Pablo Picasso, specifically Guernica, literature such as  The Strangerby Albert Camus; and for Science, the work of Einstein and Heisnenberg. Hopefully, this will give you something to work with. I'm a World History teacher--good luck.

Looking at #3, this will depend on the point of view you are taking.  To someone from the US or England, the answer might be yes.  Possibly also for someone from India or the Philippines.  For someone from Vietnam or Nigeria, the answer is likely to be no.  Some possible reasons:

  • It's good because it helped some countries set up democratic institutions and have decent economic infrastructures.
  • It's bad because it set up artificial countries like Nigeria or Iraq that are ethnically split and somewhat unstable.
  • It's bad because it caused "Third World" countries to have economies meant only to help the imperial power.

My biggest suggestion for you, rather than doing everything for you, is to pick two of these questions and to prepare your own plan. At the end of the day, it is you that are going to have to write your essay, not me, so whilst I can point you in the right direction, your grade will depend on you and your work. Therefore it is important that you are familiar with the topics that you will be assessed on.

Having said this, a question such as number 5 relating to the Cold War seems very straightforward. You need to talk about the way that relations between the US and the USSR went from bad to worse and how the Cold War used other countries as an arena for expressing the conflict that these two superpowers were unable to openly express against each other. Thus three historical events that you might want to refer to would be the Cuban Missile Crisis and American wars in Korea and Vietnam.

Thank you for your advice. I was being lazy for a bit, I didn't feel like working today.
