Why is Winnie worried about Mae Tuck's impending gallows execution?

In Tuck Everlasting the sweet Winnie Foster worries that if Mae Tuck goes to the gallows her secret will be known be everyone. Mae hit the man in the yellow suit with a shotgun when he was trying to take Winnie, so Winnie worries that the town will find out that the Tucks cannot die and about the magical water.  Winnie tries to help by convincing her parents to drop the kidnapping charges, but when the man in the yellow suit dies from his wounds, Mae is charged with murder.  Winnie knows that if Mae is sent to the gallows, everyone will witness that she cannot die.
