Why were dogs such as Buck in great demand in "The Call of the Wild"?

These dogs were very strong, intelligent, and resilient.  They could pull heavy loads and because they had thick fur, they could withstand very cold weather.  They were tough, rugged dogs.  They also had to endure fights with each other.  Not only did the dogs have to pull heavy loads all day, they had to worry about the dog fights and surviving the extremely harsh weather.  Buck was particularly intelligent and was able to survive many traumatic beatings and deathly situations in order to survive.
