Carl Linnaeus was born in 1707 in Sweden. He was the oldest of five children, and he grew up helping his father in the garden. It is here that Linnaeus developed a love for learning and botany. It was also in these formative years that Linnaeus began learning the scientific names of plants. At the time, the names were very long, very descriptive, and very difficult to remember. It was this naming system that Linnaeus would eventually fix.

Linnaeus developed a completely new way of classifying organisms. This particular branch of science is called taxonomy, and it involves the naming and classifying groups of organisms based on shared characteristics. Amazingly, his system works well enough that even with today's modern DNA mapping systems, organizing organisms based on their looks still works. Linnaeus's contributions are important because they formed the foundations of and led to modern-day classification systems. Students today learn that living creatures belong to a kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species, and this system is a direct result of Linnaeus's work.

Another major contribution of Carl Linnaeus is his binomial nomenclature system. It effectively streamlined how scientists could identify and name an organism by referring to it by the two-name genus and species identification.
