Contrary to popular belief we really don't lose our flexibility as we age. What we do lose are the habits and daily activities that help maintain bone and joint flexibility. Maintaining an active lifestyle helps maintain bone and joint health but far too many people adopt a sedentary lifestyle. This inactivity over prolonged periods of time brings about loss of muscle tone, muscle atrophy, and degeneration. This is one reason that people who suffer from common afflictions like arthritis should increase their daily activity levels. One should always consult a physician before starting any exercise regimen because other health factors may be present.
