It can also be a sign of disrespect.  You can use an upside down flag to indicate that you have no respect for the country and are purposefully trying to anger people by using the flag incorrectly.  It can mean that the person feels the country is not worthy of respect.

An upside down US flag is supposed to be a sign of distress.  The makers of the film are using the image of the upside down flag (particularly the last time it happens) to imply that there is something wrong with the US in the movie (and in real life).
