Why is Tom living with his aunt in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?

Tom and his half-brother Sid are living with their Aunt Polly because their mother, who is Aunt Polly's sister, has died, and their Aunt has kindly taken them in.  I do not believe there is any mention of Tom's father.
