I think it is generally true that there is less stigma in our society attached to lesbianism as to male homosexuality. Human sexuality and our response ot societal norms in that area are complicated, of course, but in general I think you could say that females and males both find the idea of women marrying less threatening to their own sexuality. For men, there is a tendency to think that, if they show public acceptance of gay love and identity, then it somehow compromises their own heterosexuality. This is silly, but social behavior does not always make sense or recognize science.

This is an interesting question.  I am not sure this is true.  Historically, it has been more common for spinster women to live together with no sexual reason.  Perhaps this is why we are more used to seeing to women live together.  We might consider lesbians just an outgrowth of that.
