The stream of consciousness technique is used in writing so that the reader can understand everything the character is thinking and feeling.  It is like being inside the character's uncensored mind.  We realize all of the hardships and obstacles the character feels because they are conveyed directly from him and not from others.  In a tragic story, it is especially important to know the character's thoughts and feelings since at some point in the story the hero will come to some sort of epiphany about his actions.  The tragic hero will understand his responsibility in the conflict he is experiencing and learn from it.  When that realization happens, stream of consciousness lets readers experience it more fully with the hero.  It is a great technique to help the reader empathize with the character.
