Circle is a one of the geometric shapes called conic sections ("conics" for short). This group of shapes can be obtained by intersecting a cone with a plane. If one cuts a cone with a plane parallel to its base, the shape of the intersection will be a circle.

Other examples of conic sections are ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas.
