I need three good quotes that support why it is racist that Helen Robinson couldn't get a job in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Whenever a person is shrouded in innuendos and controversy, his/her family is usually included in the general attitudes toward the individual. In Chapter 12 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to church with her where the Reverend Sykes asks the congregation to donate to Helen who cannot leave her children and go to work. When Scout, who knows that the women usually take their children along with them to the fields, asks why Helen cannot do this, he explains to the children,
"It's because of what folks say Tom's done....Folks aren't anxious to--to have anything to do with any of his family."
When Scout asks what Tom has done, Calpurnia tells her that "Old Mr. Bob Ewell" has accused Tom of raping his daughter. Scout wonders aloud why anybody would believe Ewell if they know anything about him, but Calpurnia tells her,
"It's somethin' you'll have to ask Mr. Finch about.... He can explain it better than I can."
Calpurnia leaves it to her father to explain the racial aspect to this situation.
After the trial of Tom Robinson, Mr. Link Deas, who employed Tom and defended him in court, feels badly that no one will hire Helen, and gives her a job as his maid: "Mr. Link Deas made a job for Helen."
