The Middle Ages are a subject of modern civilization because of the remarkable human achievements during this period. The fall of the Roman Empire ushered in the beginning of the Middle Ages, which were seen to diminish at the onset of the Renaissance period. Several changes such as the centralization of nations, social changes, climate changes, rebellion and resistance can be traced to this period. Modern banking, especially deposits as we know them today, traces its origins back to the Middle Ages in Italy. The first universities were also established during the same period and sought to advance the idea of research and debate, especially around controversial issues. The period saw an upsurge in rebellion and resistance leading up to the advancement of democratic ideals, especially in governance and leadership. This provided the framework of holding national and community leaders to the same legal standards as the ordinary folk.
These developments during the Middle Ages form the basis of what we know today and prepare the foundation of what may be achieved in future. Music genres such as rock and roll and reggae have their roots in the rebellious nature of the Middle Ages. People during that period agitated for change and the people were not afraid to assert their freedoms and to fight for their rights. Technological advancements would not have occurred during a conformist era and thus the Middle Ages offered an opportunity to challenge existing knowledge and norms through research and by the introduction of universities.
Most of what we experience in futuristic movies, novels and music can be traced back to our heightened levels of imagination and awareness of new possibilities as introduced to our race during the Middle Ages.
